Is it safe to say that many of us are looking forward to the warmer weather sticking? While I am looking forward to continuous sunny and warm days, better weather typically also means more construction projects. Why is that worth mentioning? Well, unfortunately, construction zones can be a hot spot for injuries and death.
Construction, an already dangerous occupation, becomes even riskier when the job is on the roadway. In addition, these zones present an increased risk for severe auto accidents, and the numbers prove it. However, construction workers are not the only ones at risk for serious injury. A press release from the New Mexico Department of Transportation in 2014 states:
“Approximately 85 percent of those killed in work zones are drivers and their passengers.”
In attempts to decrease the risks associated with work zones, the zones should be clearly marked and, usually, the zones require reduction in speed from the normal limit. While crashes with speeding as the top contributing factor for accidents appear to be decreasing – from 10.1% of total NM crashes in 2009 to 8.3% in 2013 (2013 NM Traffic Crash Annual Report, NM DOT) – speeding continues to be a top contributing factor in auto-related injuries and deaths in construction zones.
Being aware of the most common causes of work zone accidents is a good first step toward practicing a higher level of safety. Some of the common factors leading to accidents in work zones include:
- Work zones that are not clearly marked
- Speeding above the posted work zone speed limit
- Road signs that are confusing or insufficient speed warnings
- Sudden merge points
- Lanes that are incorrectly or improperly marked
- Debris in the roadway
- Holes in the road
