Early Friday morning, an unfortunate chain of events led to a very unfortunate outcome – 3 young individuals are dead and 2 more are injured.
The Albuquerque Journal (2/5/16, Perez) reported that before 3:00am, a vehicle transporting five individuals was heading north on Pennsylvania Ct NE toward Osuna Rd in Albuquerque.
According to KRQE (2/8/16, Velarde) and Albuquerque police, David Bowie (age 27) was driving the vehicle when his attempt to “show off” went awry. The speed of his vehicle reached over 100 miles per hour before crashing into a field.
Earlier that evening, Bowie and fellow soldier David Griffin (age 35) met with three women – Sondra Evans (age 28), Taeshieva Slowman (age 36), and Ivy Sanderson (age 27) in the parking lot of the Dirty Bourbon in NE Albuquerque.
When faced with the dead end of Pennsylvania and Osuna, Bowie failed to turn either right or left. Instead, the car, clocking 100 mph, flew through the dead end, hitting the curb of the road. Bowie’s vehicle launched into the air, over an arroyo, crashing into a field near a golf course.
KOB (2/8/16, Reed) reported that Bowie, Slowman, and Evans were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Sanderson is in critical condition. Griffin sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Reportedly, all three women, seated in the back of Bowie’s vehicle, were not secured by seatbelts. It has been stated that some of the passengers were ejected from the car during the crash landing.
While clearly speed was a contributing factor to the accident, police believe that alcohol may also be a factor in this tragic wreck. According to KOAT (2/8/16, Cruz), containers of alcohol were present at the scene of the accident.
We are incredibly sad for the loved ones of Mr. Bowie, Ms. Slowman, and Ms. Evans. Our thoughts go out to those who are left to cope with their untimely losses. We hope for the full recovery of Ms. Sanderson and Mr. Griffin.
