We’ve posted before on the common causes of bicycle accidents and how distracted drivers are certainly a threat to the safety of cyclists. Unfortunately, another terrible accident happened here in Albuquerque on Saturday, January 23rd, 2016.
KOB Eyewitness News 4 (1/24/16, James) reported that Nathan Barkocy, just 16 years of age, was biking with a friend and his cycling coach on Saturday when he was hit by a car. He is in critical condition, currently in an induced coma at the University of New Mexico Hospital.
Our heartfelt thoughts go out to Nathan and his loved ones at this very trying time.
Nathan is an experienced and accomplished cyclist, having recently won the Tour of the Gila race.
Stephen Williamson, Nathan’s cycling coach, was also hit by the vehicle and suffered injuries to his shoulder and hip.
Per KOB, deputies have confirmed that drugs or alcohol were not involved in the accident, though this is an incident of distracted driving. The driver is being charged with careless driving.
Update (2/9/16): We are so incredibly happy to hear that Nathan is awake after a two-week coma. KOAT (2/8/16) reported this morning that the 16-year-old has been moved down from the ICU and is now communicating using gestures. Nathan will go through additional physical therapy and, afterward, relocated to a rehabilitation facility.
We hope only the very best for Nathan on his journey to recovery.
