According to Reuters (1/29/16, Shepardson), Nissan has recalled nearly 870,000 2013-2015 year model Altima sedans due to hood latches that may be faulty. This is the third time since 2014 that Nissan has recalled vehicles for this exact issue.
The United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced Friday that the majority of these vehicles – 846,000 to be exact – are within the U.S. Apparently, owners of affected vehicles have submitted complaints to the agency, reporting that the hood of their vehicles opened unexpectedly.
Nissan has stated that the previous fix may not have resolved the issue; therefore, this recall has been issued. The auto maker will notify owners of potentially affected vehicles again and will install a new hood latch at no cost to owners.
Reuters reports that the coating of the new hood latch is intended to deter rust, which they believe will fix the issue. The prior recalls issued in years 2014 and 2015 were addressed by adjusting the hood latches and applying a lubricant.
