According to automotive and business reporter for MLive Media Group, Honda Motor Co. confirmed Thursday that a ninth death has been linked to faulty Takata airbags.
Per Reuters, this ninth death was confirmed by Honda on Thursday. The accident involved a boy, just thirteen years of age, who was driving near Pittsburgh in a 2001 year model Honda Accord. The driver lost control of the vehicle, ending up down a ridge and crashed into a tree which had fallen. Unfortunately, the thirteen year old driver suffered from fatal injuries, passing away just a few days after the wreck occurred.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration declared in December that the Takata airbag recalls have been sped up. The approximate impact to date is no less than 19 million motor vehicles within the United States. Additionally, the below listed models have been added to the recall list:
- 2005-2008 Mazda Mazda6
- 2002-2004 Honda CR-V
- 2005-2008 Subaru Legacy and Outback
Takata is facing the music with hefty fines – a $70 million fine imposed by the United States DOT. An additional $130 million could be imposed if the settlement that Takata has with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is violated.ls.
An ongoing investigation is attempting to figure out how exactly these defects have occurred. Investigators and regulators believe that the propellant which is responsible for igniting the inflators may be impaired if subject to moisture over a period of time. Apparently, all affected cars which have been linked to fatalities have been within humid environments.
